The first mistake you can make when starting a website is by making the assumption that all you need to do is to launch a website and the rest will take care of itself

In the previous article, I shared some insights on the types of businesses that should consider having a website to reach online customers, and I also discussed the cost of starting a website. In this article, you will gain ideas on what you should display on your website – and more ideas on how you can grow your business through your website.

1. Things you should display on your website

When starting a website for your business, the general expectation is to offer value to the online visitors and ultimately lead them to interact with your business. To achieve this goal, you will have to carefully plan for the things that need to be displayed to your online visitors as well as where and how it needs to be done. As a standard, every website has a landing page – also referred to as the homepage; this is the page where your online visitors expect to catch a summary of what your website is about, links to resourceful information about your business, your contact information, and in some instances – a search field.

It is always recommended to display things on your website by priority – that is – keep the most important information at the top and the least important at the bottom. Where possible, approach your website like you would a brochure; people on the internet tend to skim through web pages in a rush, and so you want to give them enough information before their attention span lapses. At this point, I should point out that poorly designed websites receive low to zero attention and so even though your information might be displayed properly – you need to make sure your design is not a letdown.

2. Ways you can grow your business through your website.

Having a website means you are in a position to have a strong online presence – and you can grow your business by making sure you keep your website constantly optimized towards promoting the growth of your brand. Online visitors tend to interact more with websites that are active as opposed to dormant websites. All dormant websites share one thing in common – they all appear neglected – and they tend to live us wondering whether the business is still in operation or not.

The first mistake you can make when starting a website is by making the assumption that all you need to do is to launch a website and the rest will take care of itself. Make it a habit to update your website as often as you would update your social media pages and chances are that visitors will engage with you as much as you engage with them through your constant website engagement.
