The importance of positioning your website strategically cannot be emphasized enough

As of April 2018, there were over 4 billion internet users and over 3 billion of these are active on social media – and these numbers are projected to keep escalating significantly.

It is therefore easy to see why websites are highly appealing for brands seeking to attract prospective online customers from this ever-growing pool of billions of internet users. The current tally of websites is at about 1.5 billion websites worldwide, and a significant number of these websites are business oriented. Competition for online customers is high across all business models – and with websites being the main tool for online presence and customer engagement – the importance of positioning your website strategically cannot be emphasized enough. By the end of this blog post, you will have acquired 8 tips on how to position your website strategically and increase its chances of being a success story for your online business efforts.

Tip #1: Think Long-Term

A website going live for the first time is a major milestone for any brand and it usually generates an understandable share of excitement – there is often the expectation that the new website is going to instantly attract dozens of customers but more often than not – the website does not live up to the instant expectations. The first and very common mistake that many new website owners make is to expect their websites to be visible to other internet users simply because it is now hosted and can be accessed from anywhere in the web-connected world. Launching your website is just the first step towards the efforts it takes to become adequately visible to your potential customers. Websites that succeed adopt a long-term strategy to build their online presence, while those that fail lack the patience and effort it takes to establish a robust online foundation.

Tip #2: Check Your Website for any Functionality Issues

This tip is by itself qualified for an entire blog post on itself as there are plenty of issues that can be cited for address in detail, but the most critical issues to check for are navigation, broken links, loading speed, and mobile responsiveness. Navigation is about how users navigate around your website and the more intuitive the user experience (UX) is the more likely that visitors to your website are going to find what they are looking for. Broken links occur when a visitor clicks on a link that directs them to a non-existent page usually displayed by browsers as a 404 error – page not found. The longer a website takes to load is the more impatient a visitor becomes and this often results into slow websites losing a significant number of visitors. You can increase your website’s speed significantly by using light-sized images but I would highly recommend consulting a professional web developer to boost your site’s technical performance. With more than half of all the internet users accessing the internet via their mobile phones more than desktop computers – ensuring that your website appears optimally on handset devices is key to remaining accessible to as many internet users as there are.

Tip #3: Search Engine Ranking Efforts

Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing et cetera are used by billions of internet users to search for particular results – and making sure your website can be found when searched for on these search engines is very important. Get familiar with the tools offered by these search engines to help you submit your website for indexing in their search results and you will have positioned your website way ahead of websites that have not been submitted for indexing in search results.

Tip #4: Set Up Your Organic Traffic Channels

Organic traffic is the people who visit your website by clicking on unpaid links to your website such as shared links on social media and organic search-results, while paid traffic is the people who visit your website by clicking on paid links such as adverts. Setting up organic traffic channels can be highly productive when done ingeniously and a great place to start would be by listing/claiming your business on google for business , creating a Facebook business page to funnel social media users to your website and many other channels that offer similar opportunities.

Tip #5: Use Google Analytics to Keep a Track on Your Website Visitors

There are several analytics products in the market that you might check out to see which best suits your needs, but I recommend Google analytics because it has a free version, is easy to comprehend, and offers much of the essential data needed in tracking a website such as daily number of visitors, demographics, and it even provides information on which areas to enhance to perform better.

Tip #6: Encourage Visitors to Subscribe to Your Website the Smart Way

Email marketing is a powerful tool when used correctly – but spamming is not considered as correct or even an acceptable marketing strategy. Spamming occurs when someone sends you emails without having given them the invitation to do so and is hence considered discourteous. Subscribing on the other hand is considered as a courteous invitation to receive emails – and hence it is a smart move to make sure you only send marketing emails to people who have given you the permission to do so by subscribing to your website. You should further provide a means for your subscribers to unsubscribe should they decide to do so.

Tip #7: Respond Timely to Your Web Visitors

When a visitor to your website contacts you through any of the communication channels that you have listed on your website – make sure you reply in a timely manner because an untimely response or failure to respond is a sure way to lose scores of potential customers. If you have a ‘live-chat’ box on your website, make sure there is someone to chat instantly when a customer opts to use the live chat feature. In case there are times when clients cannot find someone on the live chat, it is advisable to automatically notify the client when it will be possible to chat live.

Tip #8: Subscribe to Resourceful Blogs to Stay Updated
